The incidents of the burning are detailed by Dr. Schneck with a vividness which makes his account of that barbarous transaction as graphic as it is authentic.”—Editor of Washington “National Intelligencer,”Oct. 6. “The source from which it proceeds carries with it sufficient authority as to the correctness of its statements. It will be read generally with interest and will doubtless receive a large circulation.”—“German Reformed Messenger,” Oct. 5. “This little book should be read by every Pennsylvanian. The scenes therein so simply and yet so touchingly depicted, have no parallel for horror in any war among civilized nations except our own.”—Pittsburg“Evening Chronicle,” Oct. 14. “I rejoice that this little book has met so rapid a sale, though I anticipated nothing less, as it is certainly one of the most thrilling narratives I have ever read. This little book, written by a German Reformed minister, includes six letters addressed to "My Friend," but meant for the general public that might wish, after reading these heart-rending descriptions of merciless destruction, to send relief to the citizens of Chambersburg, PA, whose little town was burned to the ground by the Confederate troops under Gen. Jubal Early on July 30, 1864. The townsfolk were taken by surprise and quite defenseless as the marauders invaded their streets and homes, abusing the residents, pillaging the houses and fields, and then setting fire to everything. The southerners, when pressed for a reason, replied that they were doing this in retaliation for the burning of six or eight houses in several counties in Virginia by northern troops.Among the buildings that went up in flames was the printing establishment belonging to the Reformed Church in the United States. In 1863 the Synod had purchased the Printing Establishment of M. Kieffer and Co. for $5000 and had appointed the Rev. Dr. Samuel R. Fisher as the Manager. Dr. Fisher's home was spared, but the whole publication plant, valued at $43,000, was lost. According to The History of the Eastern Synod of the Reformed Church in the United States (H.M.J. Kline), at the 118th Annual Session of the Synod in October 1864, "The Commmittee on pubication reported that,'On the morning of July 30th, the greater part of the town of Chambersburg was destroyed by a portion of the rebel army, and in the general destruction, our beautiful and commodious Printing establishment, with all its contents, was reduced to ashes in the course of a few hours. Nothing was saved from the ruins, except the stereotype plates, the subscription lists, and the account books, which were in the fire-proof vaults.....' Synod recommended that the Church raise $60,000 to cover the losses by fire and to carry forward the publication interests."
The Rev. Dr. Benjamin S. Schneck, author of these letters, was pastor at St. John's Reformed Church in Chambersburg. He lost a two-story stone and brick building but not his home. The Rev. Dr. Samuel R. Fisher had long been associated with Schneck in German Reformed publications. His only loss, aside from the printing plant was a $500 brick stable.
Although the destruction of the Reformed printing plant stands out, several small churches and most of the commercial buildings were destroyed. The total number of buildings burned down was 559.
This little book of eye-witness accounts is invaluable to the Civil War or church historian, and the price is amazing!
